Carragher also believes that the penalty shoot-outs will also haunt England in the World CupFrom Italia ’90 to Euro 2012, penalty shoot-outs have been England’s undoing in major competitions. Players letting their faithful fans down and ending up in tears on field has been a depressingly common sight. Jamie Carragher, two time World Cupper for England was one of the three players to have his penalty saved by Portugal’s Ricardo Pereira in World Cup 2006 as they were shown the door in the quarter finals. He sat down talking exclusively with India Today to admit the team will continue to be short on confidence in penalties until they win a shoot out in the games that matter. He was also willing to say on record that England don’t have the team to go all the way.Q. Realistically how far do you think England can go this World Cup. They start in a tough group?A. It is a tough group. I still think England will qualify to the next round. But I don’t think they will win the World Cup. They will go to the quarters like they normally do, did so even when I played. If they make it there, they would have still done well.Q. Is it a good or bad thing to run into Italy in the opening game?A. One can look at it both ways. Its a tough start against Italy but England is a tough game for Italy as well. You are straight into the World Cup if you play against one of the top nations. If you do well in a first game that’s tough, it sets you up for the rest of the tournament.advertisementQ. Wayne Rooney. The world looks to him to make it happen. He’s yet to score a goal in World Cup situation. He should have a point to prove?A. Rooney does have a point to prove. He’s scored at all levels, club level, Champions league level. He’s got a good scoring record internationally as well but not at the World Cup and he would be desperate to do well.Q. Inevitably questions are asked about England’s dismal penalty record. You have been through a loss on penalties as well. England would much rather avoid a result on penalty?A. Not just England every team would rather win the game than end in a penalty shoot out but if they are in that situation again, they should try and overcome it. They have lot of good penalty takers in Gerrard, Lambert, Baines, Lampard; but until they win one they will be short of confidence.Q. Who are the favorites to lift the trophy in your book? And for the Golden boot?A. Brazil are the favourites being the home team. Maybe the home advantage and crowd will roar them on to victory. Spain is the other team you can fancy. For the golden boot, hopefully it will be Messi. I hope he has a great World Cup because he deserves itQ. No European team has won a World Cup in South America. Do you see it changing this time?A. Spain and Germany are the two European teams to break the deadlock of Europeans never having won in South America. But Brazil and Argentina have a greater chance. I still fancy Brazil to win.
