For the second-straight year, Drake took home the league’s top pitching award as sophomore Nicole Newman (Madison, Wis.) was named the 2016 MVC Pitcher of the Year. Newman was also selected to the All-MVC First Team for the second-consecutive season. Rebekah Schmidt won the award in 2015. Drake will play its first game at the MVC Tournament, held in Carbondale, Ill., Friday, May 13 at 2:30 p.m. against the winner of Friday morning’s quarterfinal action between Evansville or Illinois State versus UNI. Every game of the MVC Tournament will be broadcast online via The Valley On ESPN3. Print Friendly Version CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Drake University softball team earned multiple Missouri Valley Conference honors on Wednesday night at the 2016 MVC Softball awards banquet. Newman, who was named the 2015 MVC Freshman of the Year, is having an outstanding sophomore campaign. She is 21-12 with a 2.96 earned run average with a program-record and league-leading 269 strikeouts. Newman recorded 10 or more strikeouts in a game 10 times this season. Smith is hitting .309 with seven home runs, nine doubles and 36 RBI. She has also pitched well in the circle with a 3-2 record and 31 strikeouts. Frank is batting a team-leading .354 along with slugging a team-high nine home runs with 29 runs batted in. Her 58 hits this season is the seventh-best single-season total in program history. Sowa earned her third career All-MVC accolade also being named to the first team as a freshman and to the second team as a sophomore. This season, she is hitting .302 with a team-high 14 doubles and 39 RBI along with tallying one triple and six home runs. Sowa’s doubles and RBI totals are each tied for the fourth best single-season marks in program history. Rounding out Drake’s award winners is Alexander, who started all 52 games for the Bulldogs in the regular season. She is hitting .250 with a career-high five home runs and 24 RBI. Alexander started the first 15 games in center field before shifting to shortstop where she started the final 37 games. This is the second season for the MVC All-Defensive team, which is completed by the league coaches who nominate one player each. Joining Newman on the All-MVC First Team were freshman Kennedy Frank (Chesterfield, Mo.), junior Megan Sowa (Gurnee, Ill.) and sophomore Kelsey Wright (Olathe, Kan.). Freshman Taryn Pena (Columbia, Ill.) and sophomore Kailee Smith (Murrieta, Calif.) were All-MVC Second Team honorees. Sophomore Tasha Alexander (Eddyville, Iowa) was picked to the MVC All-Defensive Team. In her first season, Pena is second on the team in hitting with a .340 batting average and has four home runs, 11 doubles and 34 RBI along with a team-high .467 on-base percentage. On Monday, Pena was named MVC Newcomer of the Week for the first time in her career after having a great final weekend of regular season play. Just point your iPhone at it and you can read its Wikipedia entry. Science fiction? Not anymore. Two new apps for viewing Wikipedia entries about physical locations you look at through your iPhone camera are now available in the iTunes store.Wikitude and Cyclopedia are the names of the apps and both require the new iPhone 3GS. That’s because the 3GS is the first iPhone with an internal compass – Augmented Reality (AR) apps use your phone’s GPS to know where you are and the compass to know which direction you’re looking at. Then these two apps can tell you what you’re looking at that’s written up in Wikipedia. Here’s how the two different apps compare.CyclopediaCyclopedia (iTunes link) is the newest app from a dev shop called Chemical Wedding. It scores high on visual interface but is relatively simple, displaying only Wikipedia content. It got a write-up on Gizmodo yesterday, was read about by more than 10,000 people, but saw very little discussion. There is no Android version of this app and we haven’t been able to test it yet, but it costs $2 in the iPhone app store. The app has been out since July but the company hasn’t been on the radar of any of the AR-watchers we know. GamesAlfresco, the leading AR news blog we’ve found, has never mentioned this app once. Presumably the company would have sold a lot more software if it had bothered to tell people it existed. When tens of thousands of people went crazy in August checking out the Yelp iPhone app, believing it was the first AR implementation live in the iTunes store, no one from Chemical Wedding bothered to speak up about having an iPhone AR app for sale. There’s not even a link to the app in iTunes on the company’s own website. Update:Chemical Wedding contacted us and said that the app really only went live a few days go after all and that the lack of a link was an oversight. We apologize if we were rude in pointing it out. 🙂WikitudeWikitude is a well-developed AR app already available on Android phones for months. It just launched on the iPhone today. The company launched the app without telling anyone, but word got passed around this afternoon on Twitter.Wikitude has a less shiny interface than Cyclopedia but has a lot more data and is more accessible for users to add data to. I really like Wikitude. It displays Wikipedia data, but also data from international local review site Qype. Most importantly, Wikitude lets anyone add Points of Interest to the Augmented Reality app through a dead-simple interface at Wikitude.me. I spent an hour last month marking up Portland, Oregon and now anyone in town can see my notes on locations through their phone and the Wikitude app. It’s because Wikitude is so open to user generated content that I find it the most exciting of all the Augmented Reality apps. Unfortunately, none of these apps that I’ve tested on Android are performing fabulously yet – the GPS is just too imprecise and the data too sparse. These are early days though, and even today it’s a lot of fun to look at the world around you through Wiki articles. Collaborative annotation of the physical world? It just doesn’t get much cooler than that. Hopefully the technology will continue to improve and more people will learn about what these companies are doing. 12 Unique Gifts for the Hard-to-Shop-for People…

Amid speculation that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led State government was considering halting ‘excess’ water supply for agriculture to the Baramati and Indapur talukas, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Wednesday said any comment on the drought and water crisis must be made with extreme sensitivity.“The whole of Maharashtra is in the grip of an unprecedented water crisis. At such a time, there is a need to speak with extreme sensitivity on this issue. One must ensure there is no discrimination between different regions and talukas in the State as regards the distribution of water,” Mr. Pawar said, urging the government not to resort to politics over drought and water allocation. The NCP chief, who was on a tour of the drought-hit parts of Baramati, was responding to the rumours that State Water Resources Minister Girish Mahajan was thinking of cutting the allegedly excess water supply from the Nira left bank canal to Indapur and Baramati.Mr. Mahajan has said that Baramati and Indapur — strongholds of the Pawar clan and Congress leader Harshavardhan Patil respectively — have been receiving more water than required. He implied that Mr. Pawar and his nephew, senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar, had tweaked rules to divert more water to Baramati when the Congress-NCP government was in power. The Nira project consists of a storage reservoir on the Yelwandi river near Bhatgar and two canals. The left bank canal, which originates from the Nira river at Vir, irrigates areas of Pune district, including Baramati and Indapur, and parts of Solapur district. The right bank canal irrigates some other tehsils in Solapur.Mr. Mahajan said more water was diverted to the left canal that passed through Baramati and Indapur, while areas in Solapur district like Malshiras, Madha and Sangola were left high and dry.“The local MP from Madha and other leaders from Solapur district have complained that five talukas are receiving only 40% water from the Nira left bank canal, while Baramati and Indapur are receiving the remaining 60%,” Mr. Mahajan told a vernacular television channel. It is believed that the newly elected Madha MP Ranjitsinh Naik-Nimbalkar and other leaders from Solapur like Ranjitsinh Mohite-Patil, son of former NCP MP Vijaysinh Mohite-Patil, met the minister on this matter. According to rumours, Mr. Mahajan is expected to issue an ordinance on this matter soon. The move, if implemented, is seen as a stratagem on part of the BJP to break the Pawars’ stranglehold on Baramati ahead of the Assembly elections.Ajit Pawar, who toured Baramati with his uncle, said, “I have yet to hear anything said by Mr. Mahajan on this issue. I am not aware if such a decision has been mooted… But the government should know that there are people living on both sides of the Nira canal.” Senior Congress leader Harshavardhan Patil, whose bastion is Indapur, however warned of a strong agitation if such an ordinance comes into effect. “The Water Resource Department has no right to take such a decision, if at all it is being mulled. Indapur and Baramati are catchment areas. If water supply to these talukas is going to be stopped, we will be compelled to launch an agitation and take legal recourse,” Mr. Patil said.
